Weight Loss Medications

Phentermine

Phentermine has been approved by the FDA since 1959. Phentermine works by suppressing appetite and decreasing cravings while the metabolism is increased. It is classified by the DEA as a controlled substance therefore it can only be prescribed by a Licensed Provider.

The most common side effect is dry mouth, however, this can be a good thing because it encourages you to drink more water. Some patient’s experience insomnia or trouble sleeping, especially if they take the medication later in the day. Some patients may feel jittery or anxious, however, many patients interpret this as feeling more energetic. If you have an arrhythmia (which will be detected during your initial visit with an ECG), this medication can cause it to worsen, so not everyone can take phentermine. However, our clinic is very diligent in patient safety and no patient will be given a prescription if there is potential for complications because of pre-existing medical problems.

Qsymia

Phentermine/Topiramate combined FDA approved weight loss medication. Phentermine as stated above is an appetite suppressant. Topiramate has a variety of uses including migraine management and as an anticonvulsant. The quick-release phentermine in Qsymia starts working immediately, and is thought to reduce your appetite, while the extended-release topiramate in Qsymia works throughout the day to help you feel full. It may also alter the taste of certain foods, helping to reduce the pleasure of eating and potentially reducing cravings for sweet or salty foods.

The clinical trials of Qsymia showed that many patients lost a significant amount of weight and inches, and may be as much a four times as effective as diet and exercise alone. We have seen first hand Qsymia's effectiveness of reducing appetite and cravings with minimum side effects. Combined with other weight loss modalities, it can produce great results. Getting that jump-start on weight loss can be the difference between reaching your goal or giving up.

Belviq

Belviq is FDA approved to help with weight loss. The generic name is lorcaserin and it has been FDA approved since 2012.

What is unique about Belviq is that it doesn’t “speed you up” in any way, as its mechanism of action is totally different than phentermine. Instead of stimulating your sympathetic nervous system (the same part of your nervous system that is activated when you are excited, such as just before a big business meeting or a big sporting event), it increases activity of a neurotransmitter called serotonin. In fact, it specifically stimulates a receptor in your brain that serotonin attaches to that signals the feeling of satiety or fullness. Belviq is taken twice daily with or without food. Common initial side effects included headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, dry mouth, and constipation. These were minor and in most cases were not severe enough to have patients stop the medication.

Contrave

Contrave (naltrexone/bupropion) is FDA approved for weight loss in overweight or obese clients. Contrave takes two well established medications, and combines them in a special extended release tablet at a lower dose than available as separate medications.

Contrave has shown to increase weight loss when combined with diet and lifestyle changes. While Contrave is not for everyone, we can determine at your visit if you are a candidate. The ideal patient for Contrave is someone with cravings for carbohydrates as one of the main issues in the battle with their weight. It is also helpful in patients who cannot tolerate other weight loss medications that might make them feel jittery, like phentermine. Most common side effects are nausea, constipation, headache, dizziness, insomnia, dry mouth and diarrhea.

Saxenda

Saxenda is an FDA-approved weight loss medication. It is an injectable medicine that, when used with a low-calorie meal plan and increased physical activity, may help some adults with excess weight who may also have weight-related medical problems (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes), to lose weight and keep it off.

Saxenda is different from weight loss medications that you may have taken in the past. It works like a hormone the body produces naturally that regulates appetite, known as glucagon-like-peptide (GLP-1). By activating areas of your brain that regulate appetite, Saxenda may make you feel less hungry, which can lead to lower calorie intake and weight loss. Saxenda can help you to not only lose weight, but keep it off as well.

Vitamin Injections

B12

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential water-soluble vitamin that the body uses to maintain healthy nerve cells and help iron to function properly. B12 injections have many benefits and are often prescribed for deficiencies that cause fatigue, shortness of breath, diarrhea, numbness and neurological damage. It is also beneficial in increasing your metabolism. We use only high potency (1000 mcg/mL) Methylcobalamin B-12 in our injections. Methylcobalamin is the active form of B-12 and is better absorbed and retained in higher amounts within your tissues than the cheaper and more commonly used cyanocobalamin B-12, which has to be converted to methylcobalamin by your body before starting to work (and actually contains cyanide!).

B-Complex

  • B1 – Thiamine helps the body cells convert carbohydrates into energy. It is also essential for the functioning of the heart, muscles, and nervous system.

  • B2 – Riboflavin an easily absorbed micronutrient. It plays a key role in energy metabolism, the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, ketone bodies, and proteins.

  • B3 – Niacinamide assists in the functioning of the digestive system, skin, and nerves. It is also important for the conversion of food to energy.

  • B5 – Pantothenic acid helps with mental and physical stress and anxiety, reducing signs of aging, reducing susceptibility to colds and other infections, shingles, skin disorders, stimulating adrenal glands, chronic fatigue syndrome, and wound healing.

  • B6 – Pyridoxine is needed for more than 100 enzymes involved in protein metabolism. It is also essential for red blood metabolism. The nervous and immune systems need B6 to function efficiently, and it is also needed for the conversion of tryptophan to niacin.

Lipo (MIC)

The injection includes the following naturally occurring vitamins, amino acids, and minerals:

  • B2 – Riboflavin an easily absorbed micronutrient. It plays a key role in energy metabolism, the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, ketone bodies, and proteins.

  • B3 – Niacin helps the body make various sex and stress-related hormones in the adrenal glands and other parts of the body. Niacin helps improve circulation, and it has been shown to suppress inflammation

  • B12 – Methylcobalamin is the biologically active form of vitamin B12, the form most readily absorbed into the body. It is a water-soluble vitamin that is necessary for various bodily processes, including energy production, nervous system function, and production of genetic materials DNA and RNA.

  • Methionine – is an essential amino acid that helps the liver process and eliminate fat.

  • Inositol – A vitamin that is vital for the metabolism of fat and cholesterol. It prevents hardening of the arteries; it has also been shown to help in the treatment of depression and anxiety.

  • Choline – Plays a major role in cardiovascular health, in addition to minimizing excess fat in the liver through its fat and cholesterol metabolic properties. It aids in hormone production.

  • L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid which plays a vital role in the metabolism of fat. It functions as a transporter of fatty acids into the mitochondria, the metabolic furnace of the cell.

  • Chromium – helps to move blood sugar (glucose) from the bloodstream into the cells to be used as energy and to turn fats, carbohydrates, and proteins into energy. It is thought to be helpful in building muscle and burning fat and in helping the body use carbohydrates.

Lipo injections ensures your body receives all necessary nutrients to keep you at your energetic best. Many of these nutrients are not easily absorbable by mouth and need to be taken by injection. Injections are safe, effective and an easy way to keep your body well-balanced. They help increase your energy as well as contribute to the success of your weight loss plan.
